The clitoris is a female sexual organ composed of a network of nerve endings, blood vessels, and erectile tissue. She consists of an outer layer of skin (clitoral hood), and two internal part, the clitoral crura and vestibular or clitoral bulbs.
Visible to the eye is the clitoral hood, which in full or part covers the head, shaft and inner lips. This portion of the clitoris is nestled between the labia, above the vagina. One way to find the clitoris is to place a finger where the labia start and press gently as you move the finger down between the lips. You will feel a rubbery cord under the flesh.
William Masters and Virginia E. Johnson were the first to determine that all female orgasms are of clitoral origin. During sexual arousal and during orgasm, the clitoris change color as these erectile tissues fill with blood. The female experiences vaginal contractions.
