In comic production, a penciller is an artist who does the first phase of a page - the layout of panels and rough drawings (sketches) of the figures, scenery and everything else. The penciller works in pencil only, hence the name. The process is called pencilling. The results are also called pencils (for example, "Can you complete the pencils by tomorrow night?")

The second phase is called inking and done by an artist called an inker who creates the final line art based on the pencils.
