Private school

Note: This article is about independently run schools. For other meanings, see Public school.

A private school is a school that is owned and run independently of the government or state.

While such a school is bound by the law in regards to its activities, it is free to determine for itself its admissions criteria, fees, school uniform, discipline and punishment regulations and curriculum.

There are a number of countries and states where spanking of children at school is prohibited either by law or governement regulation in state and government schools but is still permitted in private schools. This situation pertained, for example, in the UK between 1987, when corporal punishment was prohibited in state schools, and 1999, when it was prohibited in all schools.
