A thief is spanked with a shingle in the grabbing-ankles position (1879).

A shingle is a thin length of wood similar to a board; the difference being that a shingle is made by splitting the wood whereas a board is usually sawed. Historically, shingles were used to cover roofs and walls of buildings to protect them from the weather.

A shingle can also be used as a spanking implement as a simple form of paddle. Either the shingle is used "as is", or one end can be tapered to form a handle. In the Southern U.S., such a shingle was called a "shake".
