Therapeutic spanking, also known as spanking therapy, is a term used to describe spanking which is given neither primarily for punishment nor for an erotic purpose in itself, nor for the fun of it. Instead, spanking is used as a therapeutic method for its curative effects, for example for physical stimulation, as an emotional release to break through a blockage, or to help someone stay focused on their set goals. Therapeutic spanking is fully consensual and implemented on the explicit request of the recipient.

Individual sessionsEdit

Individual therapeutic spanking sessions take place between consenting adults, a spanker (therapist) and a spankee (patient). After details have been discussed, the spanking can be given "as such", or if desired, embedded in roleplay of some kind to give it more of the feeling of punishment in a chosen fictional context.

A person may wish to be spanked to get rid of guilty feelings for some offense they actually committed but were not (or not sufficiently, in their own feeling) punished for. Such a spanking may follow shortly after the offense, but it is also possible to work up guilty feelings that way that go back years, possibly even to childhood. In the latter case, the session may involve ageplay - see age regression spanking.

Long-term spanking agreementsEdit

This approach involves spankings on a more or less regular basis. Typically, a punishment agreement is made between the spankee and the spanker to give spankings either for agreed types of misbehavior which are in the focus of the therapy, or in sessions on a regular basis (such as weekly). It is important to note that therapeutic spanking can be given completely outside any punitive context, for example as a device to help release emotional stress and worries.

The semi-erotic approachEdit

[…] provides a satisfying therapeutic release that is enjoyed […]
Jacqueline Omerta, about The Psychology of Adult Spanking

Some adult partners also practice a slightly different sort of therapeutic spanking which is halfway between disciplinary and erotic spanking. This variant is popular as it comes with a double payoff: besides the beneficial effects on the spankee, it also is a very bonding experience between the partners. Its M/F variant is shown in the American sketch comedy series Tracey Takes On... and is described in detail at the Fondly and Firmly domestic discipline website (see the links below).

Medical spanking and whippingEdit

We cane the patients on the buttocks with a clear and definite medical purpose. It is not some warped sado-masochistic activity.
  — Professor Marina Chukhrova, 2005

Whipping has long been used as a form of therapy, for example in traditional Buddhist/Tibetian medicine, or Europe from Antiquity up to the 19th century, e.g. for patients who suffered from mental diseases.

In 1629, the German physician Johann Heinrich Meibom wrote De Flagrorum Usu in Re Veneria & Lumborum Renumque Officio about the use of flogging as a sexual stimulant, which became a best seller over the centuries and was translated into many languages, including German, English (On the Use of Rods in Venereal Matters and in the Office of the Loins and Reins) and French.

In 1698, the German medical botanist and poet Christian Franz Paullini wrote the book Flagellum Salutis in which he praises flagellation for curative use (e.g. for diseases such as melancholia, paralysis, toothache, sleepwalking, deafness, and nymphomania) as well as for pleasure.

In the late 19th century, the American Dr. Hubbard Foster marketed a special paddle-like implement for massage called the Boston Muscle Beater/Nerve Beater.

The Swedish graphologist Hans Scheike developed a form of spanking therapy in the 1960s.

In 2005, a team of Russian scientists (Sergei Speransky, Marina Chuhrova et al.) reported that they found "whipping therapy" to be an effective means against alcohol and drug abuse, depression, suicidal thoughts and psychosomatic diseases. The scientists recommend the following course of the whipping therapy: 30 sessions of 60 whip lashes on the buttocks in every session, with a 15 minute break between the first and the second 30 lashes. They explain the results, which they say were "good and excellent", by the body's endorphin mechanism.[1][2][3][4]

In these approaches to therapeutic spanking, there is usually no roleplay of any kind involved. The whipping or spanking is ideally given in a non-punitive, service-like, medical manner, like a kind of skin treatment or a form of massage. Needless to say, by modern standards such a form of therapy which involves substantial pain must be 100% consensual and never be forced on a patient.

Jacqueline Omerta, founder of the spanking video company Pacific Force, is also a couples counselor with "a Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology". It is not known if she uses spanking as part of her actual therapy sessions. However, she plays a spanking therapist in her 1999 video A Spanking Good Cure.

Mainstream films and televisionEdit

Erin Kennedy spanked while reading aloud.

In a humorous scene from Myra Breckinridge (1970), a masseuse displays a spanking birch she is about to use as part of a Swedish massage.

In Track 29 (1988) Christopher Lloyd plays an eccentric, perverted doctor who has a nurse regularly spank him at the hospital where they work. When confronted by his supervisor, he claims these private sessions are for therapeutic reasons to treat his sciatica.

Relieving guilt is the motivation in the film Adrift in Manhattan (2007). A troubled woman (Heather Graham), consumed by guilt over the death of her son, seduces a young man. During sex, she begs him to spank her hard while telling her she's a bad mother. (Video clip at xHamster.)

A Dangerous Method (2011) is a historical drama set in 1914 based on the relationships between psychiatrist Carl Jung, his mentor Sigmund Freud, and Sabina Spielrein, the therapy patient who comes between them. Sabina (Keira Knightley) reveals she was sexually aroused by the thrashings she received from her father and recreates one such incident as part of her therapy. (Trailer on YouTube.)

Tracey Takes On... is a cable TV comedy series. In the "Secrets" episode (1997), a masochist (Tracey Ullman) gets a hairbrush spanking from her male therapist. (Video clip at MyVideo)

Two and a Half Men is a situation comedy television series. In the episode "Ixnay on the Oggie Day" (7:18, 2010) Francis Fisher plays one of John Cryer's patients suffering from back pain. She moans as he massages her lower back then begs him to spank her. "Do it, bitch!" she yells. In the outer office his secretary is confused by the smacking sounds coming from the examination room. We hear half a dozen impacts and her loud, orgasmic cries. (This scene can be viewed on YouTube.)

Spanking videosEdit

The concept of therapeutic spanking has provided story ideas for a variety of (adult erotic) spanking videos. There is even the, a video company devoted to this one subject. Below is a listing of individual therapy-related titles from several spanking video producers.
