:I agree the "governess" picture is not "typical", and what you said is indeed typical for British style school canings (including the Commonwealth). School canings in other cultures may differ (e.g. Germany seems to have favored [[bent-over-object position]]s in school cp). Rogue added a drawing by Dave Ell of a British style classroom caning. ::"Bent over object" is fine (and incidentally, equally typical for England). It is caning over the knee or in the lap that is not practical in reality because there is not room enough to get the necessary swing at the target area.
